HTML5 may be hazardous to your health

I spent a little over a week plodding through HTML5 tutorials, working examples, studying other folks’ source and then…

“This stuff is all too ‘look, mum, how clever I am,” I said in my best deep doom and gloom tones.

Graham huffed at me and said:  “Told you so.”

“Did you?  I have no recollection of such advice.”

“Well, if I didn’t I should have.  And I’d have been right, too.”

And that was about it for me and HTML5.  It’s easier than it looks at first sight but it is far, far too clever for its own good.  Another case of a solution looking for a problem, I’m afraid, at least it is for me.

Then I found that sitting indoors at the computer for all those lost hours had sparked off my winter cough once more and I’m only just recovering.

Getting older has almost nothing at all to do with getting wiser.

I did get some good news on Wednesday however.  The consultant venous specialist says that the scans and tests indicate that the deep veins in my leg are in good order–no risk of DVT–and that the secondary veins are pretty good, too.  There is some ‘incompetence’ in the lymphatic system, causing spill-over into the surrounding tissue, and that’s what is causing the swelling.

No need for surgery, but I’m to start wearing an elastic support stocking on my left leg to reduce the swelling and then to keep it under control.

“You won’t enjoy that, I’m afraid,” the guy said.

“No.  I don’t suppose I shall.  Hey ho.  Needs must.”

That’s a good attitude.  Stick with it, and we’ll have you walking normally inside six months.”

So I’m waiting for him to write to my GP, and for her to call me in for measurement and discussion on the best way to get the darn thing on and learn to live with it.

What a joy.

  1. Oh yes – what joy – wearing supporting stockings – but hey, if they help you, you WILL wear them, no?!
Good luck, as with everything else…. you are two brave men!

  2. But oh how much better than surgery I suspect.
I feel for you, I quit wearing stockings as I was tired of getting them on and off.

Sounds like you might be able to enjoy walking around this summer, something to look forward to and should help your resolve to wear the stocking. Wishing you and Graham the best.

  4. I can see Graham getting some bending and stretching exercise in the near future as the two of you figure out how to work the application and removal of the support stocking. However, if all goes to plan, things should be improving for that leg. Glad to read that the veins are good.

  5. When you wrote “Getting older has almost nothing at all to do with getting wiser.” I thought about it for a while, then I deduced that: “You can get older without getting wiser but you can’t get wiser without getting older.”

Your observations often seem to spark attempts at creativity, John. Thank you kindly.

Oh, fiddledeedee on HTML5! They have to mess around with something that works. I can’t remember who said it, but, “Anything marked ‘New and Improved!’ probably is neither.”

Glad to hear about your leg. Surgery is something I prefer to avoid whenever possible. I spent way too many hours walking recently and my legs are complaining. I have to keep doing it, though. As my grammie said, “Use it or lose it.” I like your saying better, “Needs must.”

Good luck on shedding that winter cough! Mine is perennial, I guess. Another thing about aging….[sigh].

Good health and prosperity to you and Graham! Hugs, ~ Sil

  7. Ditto, Shirley in PA!. ;) Good advice.

  8. Anything is better than surgery !
I hope by now your winter cough has left, we’ve had very strange weather so far this winter, causing all kinds of coughs and allergies.
Wishing you and Graham kinder days this year, we all seem to have fought a battle or two in 2011.
Throw us a fish every once in awhile and fill us in :)
    Hugs,
    ~Jo

  9. On a totally unrelated topic. John, I am thinking of you this afternoon … remembering a post of yours from several years ago … as I toast my toes by the fire. It is a cold Sunday afternoon here in St. Louis.

Hoping all is well with you and Graham,

    Tom

  10. Happy Valentine’s day, you two

  11. At least you are tweeting again. I haven’t lowered myself to do that yet….can’t quite find content for facebook, but I can say I miss ya.

  12. Good grief, John. I so didn’t want to go back to twitter. But if that is where you are going to be.
