That was the month that was

Still here, still well, still vacillating between the end of one career (writing) and the start of another (painting).

Meantime, I’ve been hiding indoors from the almost continuous 40 days and 40 nights of St Swithin’s rain, watching old TV programmes on the Internet and getting restless, slowly but surely.

My next door neighbour tells me that when her husband retired he sat at home for three months or so watching TV then got up and bought himself a set of golf clubs, signed up at the local club, and has been an ardent and steady member ever since.  How laudable.

Me, I have a new easel, a set of oil paints, and a stack of canvasses all ready to go.  Getting close, but don’t push me.

Graham, needing no pushing, has decorated and recarpeted two bedrooms and, in addition, has made over my study, fitting new shelves and making space for the easel and a painting station.  Very smart, but just a bit echo-filled just now.

And that brings us up to date.  Not a lot happening round here, as you may have guessed.

Keep safe.

Hello, John! I think that sound like a satisfying place to be in…between careers and with the oomph of a new office/studio! Cheers! We (in Michigan) are getting rain today but it has brought an end to the hot humidity so I’ll take it!!! As will the cats and dogs!

  2. I stop by most days to check your Twitter posts. When I saw the word “pellucid” the other day, I knew all was well, if not exciting.

Speaking of pictures, any chance of some of Graham’s lastest redecorating efforts?

  3. Of course! (as Wendy requested) we’d like some photos! We miss the photos, we miss the daily tea with OGP when we wake in the morning. It’s just not the same.

Keep on keepin’ on, John. ;)

  4. I am sorry you got all the rain.We had a few days of really heavy rain but not that much.
Oh yes please ! on the photos.
The divorce is still creaking onwards…………………No hope of selling the house at all,I fear.I decided to divorce at the wrong time I think!

  5. Good luck, Maureen. I hope things get better.

So wonderful to hear from you again. I am always interested. You are really getting way more than your share of rain!

  7. But it’s good to see you. Always.

    Why not do both. :)

  8. OK I found I did indeed have you bookmarked under ‘guys journals’. :-) So I’ve signed up for email again.

  9. I liked Mage’s suggestion…why not do both? Can’t a painter also write once in a while, or a writer take brush to canvas as well? You have an instant audience out here who will ooo and ahhh over whatever you decide to write OR paint or BOTH. That’s got to count toward something… an adoring fan club all ready-made!

  10. Just came wandering over from Kate & Jim’s. I didn’t know what had happened.

I’ve been right out straight with hunting for and moving into a new place. The cats love it! I was worried about that, but they think this new picture window is just perfect for watching the passing scene. I put a box of sweaters on the bureau under the window, and put Bobo’s blanket on top to keep the cat hairs out of the box. He only comes down to eat, drink and use the litter pan! Now, I have to make a second “cat couch” for Mimi.

  11. Seems like we’re a demanding bunch of spoiled kids… :-) But I’m completely with Mage and Bex and must confess that me too I’m happily belonging to your adoring fan club!

Representing California………I don’t let myself check on your blog site every day, protecting myself from disappointment, but when something new is added I’m beside myself with the joy of it. Thank you for the bits and pieces. They are gratefully received. Now I’ll be watching for pictures.

  13. Why can’t you do both?

  14. Hmmm, I suppose you might find it difficult to paint what you are writing but surely you could write about your painting? Ah well, to my way of thinking, either writing or painting is much better than golfing. (One might say that golfing provides exercise from walking, but so many golfers seem to prefer to ride around on those silly electric carts that they don’t even have the excuse of getting exercise.)

  15. All’s well on the west side of the eastern peninsula. I’m eagerly awaiting a visit from my youngest offspring in October!!! Only saw him for a few minutes about 4 years ago, so we have a lot of catching-up conversation ahead of us.
Enjoy life and write or paint when the muse moves you!
    Lots of Love, ~ Sil

  16. John; I seem to have lost my ‘flavour of the day’ taste with you – I haven’t seen any of your recent uploads and my email must have dropped out of your mailing list….
I didn’t notice straight away; because my computer has now developped a new mania – SHUTTING DOWN IN THE MIDDLE OF ANYTHING – and I mean, shut down, noiseless, just gone…. And when I try to re-start, I can happily (or rather unhappily) do that for hours and it breaks down again and again. So I blamed ‘myself’ – and now I will have to hope that this goes through and I can peacefully read ‘backwards’ through your last postings.
I seem to be watching paint dry quite a bit lately with my computer problems – but I do keep reading….. and enjoy living!!!
When you’re ready to paint, you will….. take your time! And just thank Graham for doing all the decorating! :)

  17. Just checking in to see how things are going. No tweets for a week makes me hope you’re doing something fun.

  18. Ooooo – Tomorrow (today for you) should be a post up, eh? We’re waiting here with much anticipation, John.

    Happy October!!!

  19. Yes, yes, that’s what we do. Waiting with much anticipation and looking forward to hear from you! :-)
