Summer solstice

Monday June 21, 2010

I woke in time to greet the sun.  From now on, hopefully, I shall be able to sleep in a little later each day.

To Swansea this morning early.  Strangely quiet, and with a number of closed-down shops.  I needed to get to the bank, and we needed to stock up on coffee beans, both of which were accomplished.  Then to Sainsbury’s and home via the petrol station, filling the tank in advance of the likely price hike after tomorrow’s ‘emergency’ budget.  It’s likely there’ll be a steep tax hike on wine and ciggies, too.  I’ll give up the ciggies but the wine will continue to flow.  It cost just over £40 to fill the tank on the Fiesta.  Just doesn’t seem possible, somehow.

And now, filled with chicken soup, olive bread and a mint choc-ice, it’s off for an afternoon siesta behind closed blinds.  It’s fiercely sunny out there.

I hate to have to say it but the emergency budget seems to be balanced. I’m happy to see that pension increases are to be properly increased after all this time.  It’ll not make me love the Tories any more, but it’ll not add to my dislike and distrust of them.  Of course, it’s only an interim budget.  The real one will come in November, giving them plenty of time to cook up an evil brew.

Hey ho.

Graham’s spent his day constructing some very neat boxing for the new plumbing in the downstairs cloakroom.

Another lovely sunny day.  Meat balls and spaghetti for dinner.  Second glass of wine settling in nicely.

Hospital appointment with a cardiac consultant tomorrow.  It’s good to have a bit of dread in one’s life.

  1. Some days I wish I were a drinking woman again. I wonder if consuming alcohol would alleviate some of the little miseries I go thru daily? I can remember consuming wine daily back in the 70′s and early 80′s until I realized it was an addiction so I stopped cold turkey and have always been afraid to have even drop for fear of it overtaking me. But I sure could go for a nice tall cold ale right about now!

  2. A little red wine is good for a person. The trouble is that a “little” can become too much too easily.

What is that in Pounds per British gallon?

    That’s about £5.83 a gallon, Wayne.

Perhaps if we had to pay so much for gasoline, we would demand effective mass transportation

Oooooo, now I’m craving olive bread….

  4. Thank you for another dose of John. I was having withdrawal pangs.

  5. I ought to tell ya, folks, that I’ve missed you all. :D

  6. Aww John, so glad to see your notification in my inbox, it made me smile :)
We complain about the cost of petrol, it’s nothing compared with the cost in the UK.
Sounds like you are busy with your everyday comings and goings, and Graham busy as a bee as usual, lovely to catch up…I’ve missed ya ;)

  7. Bless your heart, John! It’s good to see you and hear about your doings. :-) Warms my cockles, ‘deed it does!
Hugs from the “Hinges of Hell” ;-)

  8. You make life sound so cozy and put together. It’s a comfort. I hope the cardiac appt. goes well. It’s such a great feeling getting out of the doctors office. I’ve just finished eating a chicken and rice dinner and now I’m going to have a wine cooler called Bahama Mama. Yep, real sophisticate over here. xo

I remember last year (spring/summer) when the gas/petrol prices hit nearly $5.00 (dollars) per gallon here. Right now it’s about $2.80 on average in our area of NY.

It’s nice to know you missed us too, John. ;)

  10. Simply grand that you are back with us. There are days, like mine today, when there is no one home and nothing happens. Still you are such a huge part of the web and our lives to have you vanish was a shock. Even lists and data are better than no you. Even one word….it’s better than nothing.

Glad the cardiologists visit went well. And bravo to graham about the lawn. Yes, looking forward to pictures. :)

Ahhhh, sleep a little later in the morning and have your siesta in the afternoon.
