It rained all day yesterday and for most of the morning today so Graham has turned his attention to his rejuvenation of the hardwood stair that leads from the living level to the bedrooms and bath. Leastways, it’s a hardwood stair now that the very last bit of horrid green carpet has been stripped away. Can you imagine covering a beautiful hardwood stair with a smelly old carpet? There’s no accounting for taste, and absolutely no profit in exploring the total lack of it.
Tomorrow it promises to be sunny all day so I think the plan may well be to finish off digging over the front lawn prior to levelling, grading, and laying turf over all. There are two grades of turf commonly available here. First is ‘sea washed’ Cumberland. This is the finest English lawn around, like you’d get in the gardens of a stately home where no-one would have the nerve to walk on it. Ever. The second is a more practical ‘sports field’ variety, capable of withstanding a fair amount of wear and yet still looking pretty smart if it’s tended properly. We’ll be going for the latter.
Mind you, if his mother calls, he may have to take the day off from the works. Mother duty is more important than a patch of grass, even I can see that.
Me, I’m improving. It’s doubtless my imagination but I’m sure I’m feeling a boost from the geriatric’s vitamin pill I popped yesterday evening. And if I feel that way then who’s to say I’m wrong?
Oh, and the peacocks are calling from the hillside, a large white gull is circling overhead in a pellucid blue sky, and all’s well with my world. Again. That’s one repetition I really don’t mind.
Sounds splendid.
Oh my reading “mother duty” comment has brought tears to my eyes.
As for carpet on good hard wood stairs I doubt they installed smelly carpet.
But I agree with you.
I’m pretty sure there must have been a period in the recent past when it was considered ‘au fait’ to carpet the staircase and I can see it clearly, too with the risers as well as the steps themselves climbing in a river of carpeting confined by metal rods ar the base of the riser but rising always from bottom to top and utter torture to either sweep with a broom or Hoover.
I think hoovering or sweeping the stairs is the worst job in the world. It used to be cleaning the oven ,but now I’ve discovered Oven Pride ,that job is ok.
You’re certainly well-off without smelly old carpet! Hardwood is so very lovely. We pulled up the smelly old carpet in our house in Maine and found hardwood, too.
I hope you are getting that sunny day and glad to hear you are feeling better. Keep up the vitamins!
Yes, you sound mucho better. You remind me to take my pill too.
