The intention is there

March 13, 2010 · 12 Comments

Another garden day.  Very shortly before lunch I woke from an impromptu nap with a start, a grand cough/choke, and a feeling of slight guilt.  I’d planned to do a video of the current state, and did have a go.  Sadly, I’d not given myself enough time to wake up properly, so the video was a failure.  I’ll have another go tomorrow.  I did pull one frame from it, though, so not all is lost:

Graham digging trench for the new hedge

A year ago, almost to the day, I did a ‘before’ video, showing the state of our inherited garden after a soft winter.  We’d planned to get cracking then but events turned out otherwise and Graham spent the spring and summer in Somerset.  Dolly and I don’t do much in the way of garden making.  Garden sitting and lounging, that we can do, but making is beyond us now.

For the record, though, and to fill the space, I’ll repeat last year’s video here:

I think it’s easy to see there’s been a deal of work done recently.  A new video will show it better.

Well, the intention is there.

How did I manage to miss this video? I read every one of your entries. Or thought I did. Anyway, what a treat, John. Can’t wait till you do some more.

Thanks, Kate. I enjoy doing them but there seems always to be a reason not to do it ‘today’. I’ll try… :D

Do you get much water runoff from the neighbors above you? (Since it’s pouring buckets and gales here, just thought I’d ask).

I can see where you’d have much more light now. Can’t wait to see the finished product!

Haven’t noticed any significant run-off, Kate. Glad you noticed the light!

I seem to have missed the video the first time you showed it. I am now eagerly awaiting the views of the progress.

Have you taken all of the trees out?

Looks like there are trees standing to the left and center back of the picture, sfmarty. I agree with Gary’s assessment of Graham! :-D He’s made a very thorough clearing of the underbrush.
Best Wishes and show us more of the progress, please. Hugs, ~ Sil

Morning all! And thanks! I’ll have another go at an intermediate video today (Sunday).

We’ve left three trees — the holly, a tall mature ash, and a clump of hazel. The latter we coppiced a bit but if we leave it there it’ll be for the sake of the wild birds.

And you’re all right about Graham. The soil in the garden is good, but is a mess of roots, so he’s having to use a mattock rather than a spade to get it going. Twenty-five years of neglect makes for heavy going.

Looking forward to new video views of the garden project.

I couldn’t help but wonder what our son would of done with such a garden. I just finished going through his landscape folder from his house.

I’m open mouthed at the amount of work Graham has done. And do I see longer hair too?

    Bravo Graham.

It looks much bigger now that he’s cleared it .Is that a dry stone wall at the back?

  • oldgreypoet // March 14, 2010 at 11:20 pm

Hair much the same non-length as usual these days. Dry stone wall? Yup. Not a pretty one, though.
