Happy

The daffodils are coming again.  Brave little spears, yellow-tipped, very soon to flower now.  Very few shoppers go through the supermarket checkout without a couple of little bundles of buds; they may be bar-coded like everything else but each one is a promise of joy and hope.

And this is the last day of February.  We’re promised a two or three day sunny break but storms are lashing the other side of the country and I suspect that we’ll see March doing its lion act very shortly.

And there are lambs in the fields.

If it were not for this blessed general election gathering its breath I’d be looking forward to April.  I’ve little love for the Labour government but I’m full of fear when I see the Tories prattling empty promises from behind their air-brushed masks.  Sometimes it feels like we Brits prosper instead of our politicians, not because of them.

And in the little house under the pines?  Graham is happily zinging away at his new ceiling, fixing pine planking and trim all neat and tidy, and singing merrily along with Muse albums.  Dolly is zizzing away happily on one or other of the beds upstairs–she does love being able to choose which bed she’ll sleep on today–and all is well with her.  I am singing my own quiet song, too, revelling in the sudden freedom from pain.  And all is well with me, too.  And happy.

  1. The daffodills won’t be poking their pretty little heads out over here for another six weeks. We could all use the blast of colour, too.

It’s not much comfort, but I expect politicians are ilke that all over. Chin up and enjoy the blooms, you lucky devil. ;-)

  2. Guess you will have to take a picture of the daffs for me.

  3. Wonderful! By the way, here we don’t have daffodils yet, but we do have snowdrops! :-)

  4. We’ve got mud (although the howling wind is helping with that) and snow predicted for Tuesday. The thought of daffodils is lovely!

  5. We, here in the Northeast of the U.S., have wind lately. Rain too, which got rid of the piles of snow, but the wind has been downright scary. Like a tornado or a hurricane almost. We were lucky but neighboring areas were not. I suppose an earthquake would have been worse, but I’m not thinking of that now. England in spring is the most beautiful place on God’s earth, and that’s the TRUTH!

  6. John, the nicotine patches may have the same effect for your legs but certainly not the same tactile pleasure of smoking.
Bex, I hate to disagree with you especially since I have not and likely never will see England, but I think the Brenham/Burton area of Texas is without equal.

  7. The daffodils aren’t out in Devon yet John, I’ve been visiting my daughter. Went to Tavistock pannier market yesterday, and this evening the coach called at Taunton – I thought of you both times, remember you writing about the pannier market a long time ago. Glad your leg is better, but not so good about the smoking, but I admire your self control if you can stop when you want to.

  8. Daffodils are my favorite flower on earth! They are blooming here (Pacific Northwest) in great clumps all over the place. Brilliant lemon yellow amidst all the shades of grey and hints of green.

As for the smoking — all the stories are going to be anecdotal, and they only have meaning for the people they have meaning for (if you follow me) so pointless in relaying them to you. I only wish you (and yours) the best of good luck with it. And congratulate you on feeling so much better!

  9. I remember some daffy’s from a spring trip to Missouri. Large bunches of them in fields where there were once homes built at the turn of the century and now gone. The flowers remained and multiplied. The families who planted them now long gone.

  10. So glad the leg is improved, John. Can’t imagine the physiological mechanism as it relates to a pack of 20; one might usually expect the opposite. Haha, well, we can’t be certain it’s the nicotine (Wayne) or if it is indeed, anything to do with the fags (I am aware of false attribution theory). If it returns and you get the same benefits from another pack, there’ll be no stopping you! Imagine the upset in medical circles if you proved a therapeutic link, John. But, seriously, how lovely to discover one’s older “system” retains its healing powers, isn’t it?

  11. John, I understand your view of your forthcoming elections. I look at the horrid mess in Washington and would like to see every last Democrat voted out of office. The trouble is, I feel the same way about the damned Republicans.

  12. So glad you’re feeling better!
I could use the sight of a few daffys right now. Went for a walk in the misty, moisty morning of St. David’s day and thought of you. We had a cold gale from the Russian steppes later on, so I’m glad I got my walk in early.
If your leg holds onto it’s improved status you may be strolling the lanes soon, too. :-)
Hugs from chilly Corea, ~ Sil
P.S. No comment on wretched politicos.

  13. Wonderful stuff.
