It seems that Britain is gripped just now, in a hushed silence, watching Eastenders to see who killed Archie someone-or-other. Those not interested have been banished to the kitchen with strict instructions to keep quiet and make no interruptions.
I do suspect the telephone networks have been switched off, too. Heaven help us if Mr Obama wants to speak to our dear Gordon just now, to warn him that the end of the world is nigh. As a nation, we don’t care. Just so long as it doesn’t happen before we find out who killed Archie.
Except that here in the little bungalow under the pines, disinterest reigns. We don’t do soaps, not since Bette left the Rovers and the secret of Michelle’s cushion was revealed.
So, I’ve flicked round the TV channels twice. It looks as if all the non-Eastenders channels have given up the ghost and have selected the oldest of their junk repeats and the least interesting of their documentary offerings. They seem to have adopted the principle of giving in gracefully.
I’ve settled on a BBC Four docu-drama, purporting to tell all about Tchaikovsky’s women. Not an overly long programme, then.
Someone killed Archie!!!!
Who was it again who shot J.R.?
No soaps for me ever! This season I’m not watching Survivor.
Those were the days. Kristen who was Sue Ellen’s sister shot J.R. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Who_shot_J.R.%3F
Oooo – that’s right! It was Kristen!
I read every single entry and have done so from shortly after the beginning. I also read all the comments. I’m a terrible lurker but do enjoy the comments from everyone. It feels like a friendly community here and that John and Graham are our good friends and members of an expanded family.
Well, that’s a bit of scandal I hadn’t thought of exploring…Tchaikovsky’s women.
Do tell us if they dish up any really good gossip! Funny how folks get so tied up in a fictional story.
Never watched a daytime soap in my life until fairly recently, but clearly remember being at a meeting which was quickly adjourned s9 we c9uld rush home to find out what happened to Kunta Kinte! (Roots)
Olympics. We settle in every evening and cheer on our favorites. No soaps here either unless you count “Top Chef” or the “Project Runway” as soaps.
Who’s Archie ?And why should we care ?
As you can guess I don’t watch soaps either!
Eastenders runs on a local PBS station here in the San Francisco Bay area on Monday and Tuesday nights. It’s billed as the longest or one of the longest running “soaps” in England, although I believe they call it a “drama” to avoid viewer embarrassment.
It’s can be both frustrating and embarrassing to watch (or admit to watching), ranging as it does from gangster activities to nasty little runaway kids, and I’m not sure what we’re getting here aren’t earlier episodes than those currently running in Great Britain.
Now that I’ve made a proper obeisance to cultural P.C., I again ask: SOMEONE KILLED ARCHIE???!!!! ARCHIE???!!! Is that legal? Have they hunted down the writers yet and hung them on lamp poles?
i guess that you’ll be glad to know that i’ve never heard of archie or the eastenders and you may be not so glad to know that even though we don’t have that particular piece of nonsense on the airwaves here in the US, apparently the vast majority of us are also unconcerned that the end of the world is nigh.
