Sad news

I just now learned that our dear Dee Churchill, friend of the ‘net, and of the heart, died in her sleep last night.  Her brother, Merle, has posted a comment/note on the last entry of her blog:  Coffee Bean Goddess.

Bugger.  She was a good friend, a light in the wilderness, and will be sorely missed.

Nice that she went in her sleep. That’s how I hope to go when it’s my turn. I’ve heard it means that you’ve learned your life’s lessons well.

  4. It’s almost more than a person can bear. She would be honored by her spot on your blog, dear old poet. She admired you so very much.

  10. oh my gosh! Thanks for letting us know.

  11. Dee and I have chatted and called back and forth for about 14 years. She is a humorous, wise and witty soul and the very heart of kindness. I will miss her beyond words.

I am so, so sad. I’ve had some heartwarming conversations with Dee, Such a tender and loving heart behind a wicked sense of humor. My heart is broken, but I know that she and Youngblood are having a fabulous reunion.

You were such an inspiration to her, John.

  13. Oh, dear!! I’m going to miss her very, very much. I remembered when she started journaling, inspired by you, John. We were always hoping to get together some time and share some of the recipes I learned here. Such a warm-hearted and kindly soul will surely “go on to bigger and better things.”
Hugs and “Huggles” to all who loved her!!!

  14. Bugger indeed. And a few other words I won’t post here.

  15. That is sad news. She will be missed by a huge number of people who knew her on the Internet for her good humor, her wit, her writing about every day life and about spiritual thoughts, her photographs, and her recipes.

  16. I can only say the world is poorer for her passing.

  17. Oh, Oh, Oh….I’ve been so worried about her. Thank you for letting us know. We are much smaller.

  18. Joanne from Idaho

Dee and Youngblood, and you, John, are three of the people who inspired me when I first started participating in the Writer’s list. I always admired Dee’s spirit and I loved her recipes. She will be missed…

  19. I am so sorry for the loss to all of her friends and readers.

  20. Thank you for posting this. I had missed the announcement of Dee’s passing. I started reading you and Dee at the same time. I will miss her recipes and view on life greatly.

  21. Oh I am so sorry to hear this, John. I checked into her blog now and then too, tho much more regularly in years past. We shared a birthday so felt a little connection. Thanks for letting us know. So shocking.

  22. News such as thhs has long been something I’ve dreaded facing, but, for her sake, I’m glad it was this way. And I feel very sure, had she been asked to choose, this would have been her way, quietly, no fuss, no big goodbyes, just gone. She will, indeed, be missed. Amazing what great gifts of closeness and familiarity the internet has brought us, isn’t it? R.I.P. Dee and thank you for being here.

  23. I am devastated! I got to meet her on my way back from Oregon a couple of years ago, and share a wonderful little picnic in her yard. I planned on getting back up to do it all over again.

But at least she didn’t suffer — I am always relieved when death comes quickly and easily rather than slowly and painfully.

Rest well, Dee. You are already missed.

  24. John, thank you for getting the word out. My grandma and I are so saddened to hear about her passing. (((hugs)))

  25. Jerry of Dallas

Thank you, also, for letting us know. I do drop by her website occasionally — just only a few times, as I do get hungry after reading her entries, which usually consist of food as a subject!

  26. I am heartbroken at this news. Out of town for two days, I just read the announcement. She was such a love and will be so missed! I was lucky enough to have met her in Houston, at YB’s, where we shared laughs, hugs and The Claw. Remember?

  27. What a marvellous life to celebrate! I was just reading her blog, via your link. A lady who really knew how to live, evidently, with other people right there at the centre of her life. No crushing dementia, no paralysing disease, writing and enjoying life creatively up to the end. And when it came, it was by the most merciful door out of this world we might hope for. I didn’t know dee, but I hope her blog — what a wonderful memoir a blog can be — remains in cyberspace for the indefinite future, so people like me can rummage in it and be thankful for such a well lived life.
