Not Superman

No, it’s not a bird.  Nor a plane.  And it’s certainly not Superman.  It’s nothing more nor less than a rather nice 1970s retro fireplace, designed to take an (electric) wood-burning stove.  No flat screen TV will mar the white canopy.  Not even a picture, so I’m informed.  Just pure, plain white.  Very 1970s.

Progress on the project from now on will largely be of the less visible kind so after this I’ll wait on the photos until the thing is close to its final state, with the stove in place on the stone-tiled hearth and shelf.

It’s been fun, though, hasn’t it?

  1. That’s even better than a dumbwaiter! Looking forward to the finished pictures.

  2. HA! A fire place! Yes, of course, I knew that!

Yes John, it was great fun. Can’t wait to see the finished project. I wish projects ’round here would be done with such great speed.

  3. That’s going to be so cozy and comforting. There’s just something about a fireplace. (sigh) I can see it all now . . . you and Graham and Dolly, curled up on big pillows, sipping away at mugs of mulled cider, gazing into the leaping (electric) flames.

  4. Wonderful! “…cozy and comforting.” Dee has the right words for it! Like my heated ['ondol'] floor, which the Romans had when they were in Britain, though mine is the electric version. ;-) I wish you a great deal of pleasure with your fireplace during the cold winter evenings.

  5. G and I guessed right. What a winner of a design that is. What fun.

  6. A fireplace! Would have never guessed it since I didn’t have an idea that it could be constructed this way. But it’s a wonderful idea for the winter ahead! I’m sure you’ll have a good time in front of it! :-)

  7. Well now can I bring some marshmallows for a good toasting? :-)

  8. So we can sit in front of our fireplaces this winter together… except for being five hours off in timezone.

  9. Not even a picture? Are you going minimalist now? I envy you the fireplace. I’ve wished we had one in our home for years. We do have a non-working fireplace in the dining room but can’t use it. Yours will be so cosy and lovely. Thanks for sharing the process.

  10. Very nice.I have an electric flame fire too as this place has no chimney. It is very comforting to have a flames dancing on a cold day .And no mess to clean up before you use it again.

  11. OH! Not a corpse :)

Got a projector? You could use that wonderful space above the opening to show your evening’s entertainments. Or, I’d be happy to rent you the 3/4 length oil painting of me in my wedding finery.
Oops! On re-reading, I make note that his lordship hath decreed nothing will mar that pristine beauty, Okay. So be it. But that portrait once hung very successfully over a fireplace, I’ll have you know. So there!

Oh, and, yes, it’s fast approaching a real architctuarl work of art, and that I sincerely do mean. Very understated and un cluttered. Nice!!!
