Sitting in the sun

The sun has come back for a few days, forecast to last through the weekend.  Blue skies.  Fluffy white clouds, though not too many of them.  Dolly basking in the sunshine, feet firmly in the air.  A thrush singing in the silver birch tree.  I find my spirits rising as the world warms through.

This medicine, along with the first Prozac of the SAD season, makes me feel that things are fine again, and that I can see this thing through once more.

I discovered yesterday that the use of spray-on-wipe-off germicidal cleaner on the kitchen counters has built up an invisible, sticky film that feels much the same to the touch as laying your hand on a fever patient’s brow. Quite disgusting, really.

“What should I use to get rid of it?” I asked Graham late last night.

“Washing-up liquid in hot water.”

I tried it earlier this morning, and it works.  Hallelujah!

There has been a spate of documentary and docu-drama presentations on TV this week, marking the first anniversary of the fall of Lehman Brothers on September 15.  I was chilled to be reminded that the depression that followed on the 1929 crash lasted through to 1939 and the outbreak of WWII.  I doubt that we’ll witness a rerun of either of those events but even so it does make you wonder.  I think we’ve learned a bit since then but sometimes it does feel as though we ought to have learned a whole lot more.

It’s the season for sombre anniversaries just now but I’m not minded to inhabit the shadows.  Rather I shall follow Dolly’s example and sit, gladly, in the sun.

  1. I would of recommended plain old vinegar on the counters. Then again I don’t know what your counters are made of. :-)

Curious, washing up liquid, are you referring to what we call liquid dish soap?

Imagine so, Bonnie, though they’d not be able to describe it as ‘soap’ here. Comes in a squeezy plastic bottle: “Mild Green Fairy Liquid” they used to sing in the jingle… :-)

  2. People call it soap but it isn’t soap — and the manufacturers cannot call it soap — the labels say “dish detergent” or “dishwashing liquid.”

  3. I too will follow Dolly’s example. After I do my volunteer stint this mornin, you will be able to find me semi recumbent with book in hand.

  4. Mmmm, have a good weekend John :)

  5. Yeah, I use vinegar or whatever comes quickest to hand when dealing with “build-up” of the waxy or gummy variety. I will confess to using dish detergent (Joy) to wash my fruits and veggies, to get rid of the pesticide sprays. I don’t have a lot of trust when it comes to my edibles.

So glad you are feeling better, John! A bright day sure does liven up all creatures. Gotta love that bird in the birch. Heheh, Dolly might “love” it differently, though.

  6. another vote for vinegar.

A very effective (and old) remedy for colds, etc, is one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar, one tablespoon of the darkest honey you can find, and one glass of water. Adjust the honey to taste so that it tastes like cider to you. Have a glass a day.

I raised my son on it and he never had another ear infection again. (very prone to them when small)

Now, 50 years later he still uses it when he feels “iffy”.

    Great disinfectant.

  7. I’m happy that you have blue skies. It’s windy and pouring with rain here.

  8. Windy and rainy here too.

Another vote for vinegar, here too. Although I’m very surprised at Jim! Only two sentences – I’m disappointed. ;) I expected more of an explanation!

    Enjoy your sunny days, John.
