The magic appeal of a forest glade

A strange weather day, foggy and sunny by turns, and chilly enough to make Dolly hammer at the door to come no sooner than she’d gone out.

We made a quick trip to Neath so’s Graham could grab a few bits of DIY stuff.  I took advantage of being there to nip into Morrison’s next door and get a couple of items of groceries and a bottle of cheap Italian Chianti for cooking.  Strange thing, these ‘nip’ shop expeditions.  They drink up the money at a much faster rate than a proper weekly shop.  There’s doubtless a reason for it but I’m feeling too old to get all complicated with the psychology and the budgeting.  Easier by far simply to avoid ‘nip’ shops.

Back home quick as quick (the resumption of a low-dose diuretic adds a random hastiness to the mornings just now) and glad to be back in the warm.

Dolly was stretched out on the day bed alongside the radiator, soaking up the heat and gazing absently at the birds and squirrels in the tree opposite.  A blaze of golden celandine lights up that corner of the garden and adds to the joy, and to the illusion of a woodland glade.

“We could do a lot worse than leave that corner, build up on it with bluebells and woodland bulbs and corms,” I said.

“I’ve been thinking along those lines myself.”

“And you could still have your water feature, like a babbling brook down the bank in stages.”

“That appeals.  That really appeals.”

It’s good, on a chill April day, to look out on a garden site and plan what you might do with it.
