journal of a writing man

… and on with the new

January 1, 2009 · 20 Comments

It’s a lovely, sunny morning, fit to start a New Year.  And, on such a morning, what could be a better coffee and snack than the first slice of a brand new panettone?

Panetonne, New Year's morn

Panetonne, New Year's morn

So, there we are.  A new year.  A new volume of the journal, and off we go again.

I wish you all the happiest and most peaceful of New Years.  They tell us 2009 is going to be a tough one.  We’ll pull through, especially if we all pull together.

 Technical note:

WordPress will, so far as I know, allow you to ‘grow’ a blog without limit and, in my first attempt, I did so.  Sadly, there is a quite low limit on the size of the blog for copy/restore/backup purposes and I fell foul of that without knowing what I was doing.

From now on, then, I shall be keeping my online journal in annual ‘volumes’, each one a separate WordPress blog.  This is the first entry in volume 12.

I hope to be able to find the time to strip the old archives back into volumes in the same way.  Meantime, the volume/year list at the top of the sidebar links to the beginning of each year.

It makes sense to me, and it’ll get done.  Eventually.  And, in case you should get the wrong impression, I really like WordPress, and intend to go on using it as long as I can.

Happy New Year to you and Graham :)

    That panetonne looks tempting.

    So here we are!

The sun is just beginning to make the sky a tiny bit orange on the horizon. My car is warming up and I’ll be off to work in a few minutes. I’ll enjoy the drive today. No one will be on the road – so I’ll get to enjoy the sunrise in solitude. A fine way to begin a new chapter.

    Happy New Year!
(can I take a slice of that panetonne w/ me???) ;)

So far 2009 is better than all of 2008. Happy new year. Now I am off to find a source for panetonne.

Happy New Year, and I also love the look of that panetonne. Yummy way to start the day (year).

I like the look of the panettone, too. It looks familiar, so I followed your link. The ingredients are the same as a sweet bread made in Portland, Maine, by a family called Terroni, who run a grocery store there. I dated one of the young men back in the Neolithic era, and he brought a panettone to my parents one Christmas. It’s delightful!

You know, great minds do run in the same channels, as I picked up a loaf of whole-wheat fruit bread earlier today at the local Korean bakery. It’s not panettone, but as close as one can get here.

Yes, indeed, let us all do our little bit toward promoting positive efforts to bring this economic downturn to a speedy close. As much as I want to spank the greedy financiers, it will be healthier for all of us to practice sensible thrift and helpful acts toward those around us who have been “caught in the mangle.”

    Happy New Year everyone!
A toast and a quote to share:

In the New Year, may your right hand always be stretched out in friendship but never in want.

    and

For last year’s words belong to last year’s language And next year’s words await another voice. And to make an end is to make a beginning. ~ T.S. Eliot

That panettone does look good. Our tradition is black-eyed peas today. And while I do like those, I’m thinking now a sweet tradition should also be started! :)

Great snap of a lucious breakfast or snack. I tried to get Jan 1st post and was told that the link is broken.
    Maybe you could fix that>

Listen, I don’t want to be telling tales out of school but — that photo? Notice the hands poised on either side of the panetonne serving — I swear they are twitching in their eagerness to have at the goodies. (grin) Excellent beginning for the New Year, John.

Heh! You got me, Dee. Within seconds of being told the photo-shoot was in the bag, that slice of yummy, yeasty panettone was breadcrumbs!

Goodness, what a wonderful new start to the new year. Glad you are feeling so much better…..except you sent it this way, and we are glad to see your new year’s start under a familiar old title.

After viewing that picture I just had to go put on the kettle for some hot choc. Now what can I use for the bread? :-)

Thanks for the grand welcome to the new journal volume, friends. Reminds me, somehow, of the days back in the 50s when I kept journal in hard-cover bound notebooks and started a new volume each year.

I think I’ve found all the bad links and such now (except for the one in the notify, where there’s no mending) so the whole thing needs a couple of days (the Internet guys say three) to settle down and rationalize across caches and so-on. If there are any persistent problems after that, let me know, and I’ll see what I can do.

And now I’m taking a glass of something nice into the living room and flopping in front of the TV. Goodnight, all!

Glad you found a way to work it all! I’ve found you at the new address and all is well with the new year.

Rey is in Cueramaro and I’m here in Sacramento. Hmmm – well, not all perfect for sure!

  • L'autre Monique // January 1, 2009 at 9:53 pm

Oh yeah, lovely panettone! It does, of course, reminds me of the yumny ‘brioches aux raisins’ from back home, and you’ve made me long for one. The brioches are a traditional sweet bread at Christmas (although they can be found year round), and so I am guessing the two are related? Either way, it looks so delicious, I’m just going to have to find a good brioche recipe!

I love your misty header picture, that would be the area around Neath and its abbey, wouldn’t it?

It’s the view across the valley from my study window, Monique. Part of the ‘Knoll’ estate centred on Neath.

Happy New Year from the other side of the pond!

Happy New Year to you all, and to your readers.

I made a rosemary bread the other day in my bread machine and just for fun I threw in a cup of those little fruits they use in fruitcakes, and it came out quite nice, all rosemary-y smelling, and bits of fruits, and all. I sure love a bread-machine. Have you ever thought of having one for yourselves? It’s quite easy putting together a bread from scratch that way. Anyroad, have a healthy New Year.
